In my 27 years of career, I have travelled the world with more than 600 students for study abroad, Fulbright, and academic research projects. I have worked with local entrepreneurs over 20 countries and research on the following topics: sustainability, social entrepreneurship, cultural heritage, and tourism.

Food & Culture

Much can be learned about the history, traditions, and values of a population by observing what they eat, where they eat, why they eat, and how they eat. The availability of various food products is also shaped by the climate, geography, history, and politics of a region. Recent trends toward healthful, organic products have become more mainstream, reflected in the addition of organic food lines at retailers like Walmart and the growth of fast-casual restaurants such as Chipotle, which specializes in sustainably sourced food.

Tourism

The United Nation's World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) defines tourism as those activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for no more than one consecutive year, for leisure, business, or other purposes. With this definition in mind, it's worth noting that tourism ranks as the first, second, or third highest generator of revenue in 62 countries worldwide. Rising environmental, cultural, and social pressures make sustainable tourism development essential, even as travel grows, fueled by emerging markets and platforms like Airbnb and Uber.

Social Entrepreneurship

A social entrepreneur is a visionary leader who achieves sustainable, systemic change in addressing social, cultural, or environmental issues through invention, a different approach, or a unique application of existing or emerging technologies. Ashoka, a well-known organization now in its 35th year, is dedicated to finding, selecting, and supporting the world's leading social entrepreneurs. Today, the organization counts over 3,000 Ashoka Fellows working across more than 89 countries, demonstrating the global scale and impact this growing field continues to achieve.
